Personal Sustainability Action Plan

This plan can be structured to focus on your current organisation or another organisation that you are familiar with, and will become a comprehensive resource for you to use as you continue to work towards a net zero future after the course.

The purpose of the ongoing project is to demonstrate that you are able to apply the theory you have learnt in the modules to a specific real-world business. As such, you are expected to reference the theory from each module that you draw on to complete the assignment. You are also encouraged to carry out your own research to enable you to consider multiple perspectives, identify important patterns and substantiate your arguments by citing reputable sources.

Selecting a business for your ongoing project

Where possible, you are encouraged to draw on your own professional context for the ongoing project. However, you may also choose to base your project on another commercial business or industry that you are interested in and wish to engage more effectively and/or influence. This could be the company you work for, a client or supplier, or it could be one that has good public information on climate change.

We recommend choosing a relatively large, established company since many of the questions will be easier to apply to an established company rather than a small company, an NGO or a government agency. The company does not need to be a leader in terms of net zero ambitions. In fact, it can sometimes be easier to develop a plan for a company that is just starting to address its climate change impacts.

The questions will require deeper insight as you progress through the course, and it is therefore important that you use the same context for all four assignments.

Make sure you read through this entire template before starting work on Module 4, especially if you are not planning to use your own company or if your company is not an established larger company. In Module 8, you will be asked to develop a personal plan of action. While you will have some creative freedom when thinking about your role in your chosen business, it is important that you are able to relate to the real-world requirements of that role and can draw upon that knowledge in your action plan.

Question 1

Identify at least two stakeholders (individuals, businesses or groups) you could collaborate with to drive decarbonisation in your chosen business or sphere of influence. The stakeholders can be internal or external to your chosen company or business sector, as long as you believe they would add value as a collaborative partner. Note that collaboration here means an approach where both parties work together to achieve a common goal (as suggested in the course materials), rather than simply commissioning consultancy work or adopting existing external standards.

Describe the areas in which your stakeholders exert influence within your chosen company and/or outside of it (eg as NGOs, public or private sector stakeholders). At what level could this collaboration generate change, ie organisational, sectoral or wider society? (Max. 300 words)

Question 2

What would be the commercial advantages of this collaboration for you and the other stakeholders, and how could it influence wider societal change? Identify at least two commercial advantages. These should be overall advantages; you do not need to specify two separate advantages for each stakeholder. (Max. 300 words)

The response clearly identifies more than two relevant stakeholders, with an evidence-based justification of their value as collaborative partners. The link between their areas of influence and the anticipated level of change is well argued and shows an excellent insight into how the collaboration could multiply influence.

The response identifies more than two clearly outlined commercial advantages, with strong justification for their relevance to each stakeholder. The case for influencing societal change is excellently formulated and demonstrates deep insight into the current role of the business or sector in driving societal change as well as an opportunity to expand this role.

The structure of the response is exceptionally clear and easy to follow, and the word count limit is adhered to. Evidence of relevant further reading and independent research is clearly articulated with relevant references, practical examples, facts and data seamlessly integrated to support statements throughout.
